An Ecological Assessment of Barrm Birrm

The Shire's Ecological Assessment of Barrm Birrm has been completed, and in short order will appear on the Shire website. It vindicates our vision and our persistence in Riddells Creek Landcare in looking after this important bit of bush.

We formed in 2005 to look after what we soon came to call Barrm Birrm. An early statement of significance by Russell Best and Lachlan Milne put the Shire on notice. Now, nearly 20 years later, the assessment by ecologists Geordie Scott-Walker and Karl Just spells out what's there, and sets out a 10 year plan to reverse the degradation and bring the bush back to stable condition.

Last orchid walk, Lynley from the Friends of Holden Flora Reserve got a big thrill being immersed in Barrm Birrm. As we worked our way up from the creek, finding the early shoots of sun orchids and those pale lilac fingered orchids, I remembered again that Barrm Birrm has few weeds. That is a rare thing. We should remember, and be grateful for what we have at our back door.
