Walk - Bushfood of Barrm Birrm

posted 9 Oct 2011, 20:49 by Narelle Sutton   [ updated 24 Oct 2011, 16:28 by Russell Best ]

Sunday 30th October starting at 2pm.

A “Walk Through the Bush” will be hosted by Riddells Creek Landcare through Barrm Birrm (the hill that provides the backdrop to Riddells Creek) on Sunday October 30, starting at 2pm. We’ll be using the Riddells Creek Landcare Flora ID book “Macedon Range Flora” that is based on this area (available from the RC Post office for $10). Bring your book with you!

All are welcome at the Community Walk and it’s free.

This land is one of the best wildflower areas this close to Melbourne with numerous rare plant species, including the Hairy-leaved Trigger-plant, 28 orchid species, and much more.

There is also a wide variety of bushfoods with around 50 plant species in Barrm Birrm that can provide food (some are still used in today’s bushfood industry) plus many other plant uses (including for tools, medicine and poison).

Please wear your sturdiest footwear and bring your own water & snacks.

Meet: ~2.9 km up Gap Road, Riddells Creek (dirt road section, former Riddells Creek Winery building carpark)
