This page covers the Class: Arachnida which includes spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. These are not
insects (Class: Insecta) although they are related at a more basic level (ie. they are in the same
Phylum: Arthropoda). Arachnids have four pairs of legs, whereas insects have three pairs of legs.
Arachnids have two main body parts, whereas insects have three. Insects have one pair of antennae
and many have wings, whereas arachnids have no antennae and are wingless. There are approximately
2,900 species of spiders in Australia!
