Oxycanus lyelli

Large moth (a bit smaller than index finger).
This moth is named after George Lyell from Gisborne. George Lyell was one of the
Victorian 'giants' of the collecting world from an Australian perspective.
His
collection is the basis for the Melbourne collection and holds hundreds of
'types' (forever the reference for that type of moth). He and
Waterhouse
published
the first of the comprehensive butterfly books for Australia.
Because
he lived at Gisborne, the area is the 'type' locality for many species.
