Cicadas and Hoppers (treehoppers, planthoppers & leafhoppers) are insects that feed on plant sap.
They make up the Suborder Auchenorrhyncha within the Order Hemiptera (the Order Hemiptera also
contains True Bugs, Aphids, Lerps and Scale Insects). Many Cicadas (not all) are more than 2cm long
and many Hoppers (not all - eg. Lantern Fly) are less than 2cm long. Cicadas are well known for their
ear-piercing calls, often at dusk, during summer. There are about 250 species of Cicada in Australia
and over 1000 species of Hoppers.

Good book about Cicadas: "Australian Cicadas" by Max S Moulds. A good general book about insects,
covering Cicadas & Hoppers, is
"A Field Guide to Insects in Australia" by Paul Zborowski & Ross Storey.

More about Insects & other Invertebrate classes.

We'd like to acknowledge Max Moulds, Peter Marriott and Wendy Moore for there
help in identification on this page.

If you've seen a Cicada or Hopper in Riddells Creek that isn't on this list
please let us know ... we'd love to add it to our list.
